THIS WEEK'S FEATURED CORPSE: DAN FAUPEL AND CREATIVE VISIONS

RFR: Welcome to becoming one of our "Featured Corpses" Dan and I know you Sit Back, Relax and Rot Away to R.F.R. right?

DF: Yeah, I definitely enjoy your show...I've downloaded several of the shows and played them for the guys while we were working up at Creative Visions...you've raised a few eyebrows...hehehe...

RFR: Let's just kick it off right away by telling us, Who is Dan and Creative Visions? And what got you started in wanting to do what you do.?

DF: We are a collection of craftsmen and artisans who are dedicated to advancing our craft. We will always push our limits and the limits of the entertainment aspects we handle. We love what we do, and I think that really shows in our finished product. We enjoy the challenges that we are presented with everyday.

As far as what got me started in wanting to do this sort of thing, I have always been artistically and mechanically inclined since I was a little kid. I was always coming up to my mom to show her my latest "invention". I would sneak out of bed in the basement late at night to watch the classic monster movies on my parents old black and white TV (you know, the ancient kind that takes five minutes to warm up), and then the next day try to create a Frankenstein head out of paper mache'. I was always fascinated with scary things.

One October my dad finally succumbed to my begging, and took me along with my older brother and sister to a local Jaycees-type haunted house, even though I was probably still too young. He told me I would be too scared. I told him I would be fine, but he was right. I think I made it to about the second scene before my dad ended up having to take me back out the entrance because I was crying so hysterically. I'll never forget it. It was just some guy in a bad devil costume beating the wall. I think it was that anticipation and fear of going in, along with his beating on the wall heard from a distance that really freaked me out. He even had to break character to try to get me to stop crying. What a riot. I think more than scarring me, the experience just left me with more intrigue for the macabre. As I got older, my goal ended up wanting to be a special make-up fx artist. When I was fifteen I lied about my age so I could work at a small local haunt. I was creating my own Freddy Krueger prosthetics from scratch, and was their best actor by the end of the season. I've been involved with haunts ever since.



RFR: Now you also specialize in the fabrication of animatronic characters and themed environments for amusement facilities all over the US and overseas. Is there any one project that really was your favorite to work on and feel proud of?

DF: We've been fortunate enough to have worked on some very cool projects, but I would have to say that my favorite project so far would be the Jaws Encounter attraction that we designed, built and installed in Dalian, China. It starts with an impressive animatronic boat facade. Then you board into an extensively nautical themed queue area, which is really an interactive walk-through. You then go into one of two identical special effect theaters, each boasting over 80 animatronics, video and special effects. The show would culminate with a massive animatronic great white shark ripping through the hull of the boat, thrashing around as hundreds of gallons of water would pour in around the sides of it. The dual-design of the show can handle a whopping throughput of 20,000 people a day...this is a theme park attraction, but imagine having that kind of throughput in a haunted house!



RFR: Your work is outstanding and you even made an instructional DVD titled "Lifecasting for Silicone Applications" which we have watched and it gave us some real help in creating some of our own ideas. What made you decide to create a DVD for the public and does it seem to help others out there looking to grow in knowledge?

DF: Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. Back when I was really trying to find resources to help me learn more, like books and magazines and videos, there just wasn't a whole lot of selection for specialized knowledge like that. Really, there still isn't a big selection nowadays. It's my way of paying back for all of the knowledge I've learned from other people over the years. There will be more instructionals from me down the road...stay tuned!

RFR: You are also involved with the International Association of Haunted Attractions. What is your role as being part of IAHA, and has it been rewarding?

DF: I'm currently a member of the Board of Directors, and used to serve as their Committee Director. Now my primary role is as the Chairman of the IAHA Vendor Committee. I've been a big part of helping the haunt industry vendors communicate more. I serve to pay homage to the industry that I came up in.

The big National PR Campaign we organized this year I think will pay dividends to all haunts around the nation. All haunts should join IAHA to give our industry a unified voice. People can learn more about the association by visiting HAUNTEDHOUSEASSOCIATION.ORG.

RFR: Now Halloween has come and gone and October is the peak for all of us in the Industry, has it been a busy season for you this year..and if so why?



DF: We've been busy, but this has actually been kind of a down year for us in terms of haunt related work. There have been some really fun and unique projects though. We also recently finished (well, near-finished anyway) our new website. . It has been a long time coming.

Another thing we did this year was to split all of the haunted house oriented stuff that we do into it's own new company called Haunt Visions. Creative Visions had become more amusement park oriented, and the haunt stuff was getting neglected. Now it will get the attention it deserves, and be able to be marketed properly. It's still the same top-shelf Creative Visions quality, along with the same excellent customer service people have come to know us by.

RFR: What do you think are some of the top new products and scares this year in Haunted Attractions?

DF: I love some of the new stuff my pals at Unit 70 have come up with, especially their skeletal horse. Gore Galore has come up with some great new costumes that I have seen, and you can't top the make-up and skills of the Wolfe Bros. A company called Screamland Productions makes some phenomenal looking haunt "weapons" called Terror Tools that you just can't beat the price. I really like the new silicone masks by SPFX masks too. They are a great deal for what you get.

RFR: With Halloween comes Trick or Treating. Remember those old costumes, plastic, rubber band masks with the picture of what you were suppose to be on it? I was a Werewolf once, but you only knew it because my plastic drape had a Werwolf picture on it. I think we all had one of those costumes at some point. What were some of your favorites as a kid? Wasnt fun trying to breath through that little slit too above the mouth?

DF: Oh yes...we had a toy soldier and Batman costumes like that as kids. I've got some funny old photos of us in those get ups. Those plastic masks would acquire a very distinct smell from the sweat and the condensation formed from trying to breath through that little slit...yep...don't miss that at all!

RFR: What are some of the films that you consider your all-time favorites in Horror?

DF: Hmmm...that's a tough question...there are so many. Some of my favorites are Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Day of the Dead, House of a Thousand Corpses, Nightmare on Elm Street, Children of the Corn, Psycho, and all of the old classic monster movies.

RFR: Well let's just get close to finishing. I know everyone wants to know...How Many Licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

DF: 69

If it’s one name in the Haunt Industry you recognize for Make-Up and FX it’s Bloody Mary (aka Bobbie Weiner). Bobbie has been a friend to Rotting Flesh Radio and has made several appearances on the show since 2005. When it comes to conventions, tradeshows and mae-up the industry knows Bobbie. Not only is she an accomplished Make-Up artist who has worked on such films as Titanic, she is the provider of make-up for the United States, Sports Events and more.

So getting to the point of the post, Bobbie has been featured on the cover of the newest issue of Millionaire Blueprints Magazine. She was kind enough to share with us her visit to Barnes and Noble where she and her friend Donna Hall looked at the news racks to see the issue that went on sale this week. If you want an inside look at the workings of Bobbie Weiner and also her alias as Bloody Mary be sure to read the latest issue of the magazine. We have picked up a copy last night and it was a fantastic read. Even if this isn’t the kind of magazine you would normally read, it does give you a wonderful look at the success and hard work Bobbie has accomplished over the years to get where she is today.

HAuNTcon 2008 is Rising From The Grave This Weekend!

So the time has come to let the Dead rise from the grave as HAuNTcon 2008 is well on its way with Pre-Show Haunt Tours Kicking Off last night and continuing today and tonight. Our RFRCasket Crew have confirmed the tours have been nothing but top notch and full of action, fun and of coarse haunting!

So the official event kicks off this week and is gearing up to be another HAuNTcon to remember. We will be bringing you updates from the event and…YES we will have coverage on Rotting Flesh Radio as well.

So tomorrow things will start crawling from the grave even faster as it brings the Nightmare on the Bayou Haunt Tour from 8pm to 11pm. The Tour and Social at Nightmare on the Bayou in Houston, Texas is going to be one of those events to help you see Haunts you could never experience during the regular haunt season due to location, running your own event or other reasons. The attraction is located next to a huge Halloween and Costume store that will be open to attendees during the tours. The multi-element event is going to be a huge welcome to HAuNTcon 2008 and the lights on and off walk through will give you the opportunity to see the inner workings of how a Haunted Attraction works.

The tours are kicking off from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. So check out this event and see what all the horror is about at Nightmare on the Bayou

Now fear not, if you can’t attend the haunt tours you can still attend the convention itself. Tickets Are Still Available On-Site for HAuNTcon 08! Nightmare New England: All New Haunted Attraction for 2008

Attention all you haunters and hauntees in the New England area! There is an ALL-NEW event set to open this October for you. Starting this year one of the Bad Boys Scenic Design, who is also currently on the latest edition of Rotting Flesh Radio, has signed on to be one of the new attractions team.

Mike (a.k.a. Tattoo in the indsutry) was brought on board as Director of Operations for a new event called Nightmare New England. It will be featuring FOUR different Haunted Attractions among many other special events!

Tattoo does remain one of the Bad Boys Scenic Design and now can also work at an event in his home area. So East Coast Haunters get ready for a new level of FEAR and keep checking back to the dark and evil website for the event created by Sinister Visions!
